With the release of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, many of you might be wondering if the odyssey movie is based on a true story. Or what The Odyssey even is.
Well, there are two parts to this answer:
1. Is the original Odyssey story written by Homer based on a true story?
2. Is the film, based on the story, based on a true story?
Let’s start with the first question. Homer is credited with having written The Odyssey around the 8th century BCE, which is considered a chronological sequel of sorts to his other epic, The Iliad.
The story follows Odysseus’ return home following the Trojan War.
Was Odysseus a real person?
A lot about The Odyssey is a mystery, which makes it loads of fun to study and interpret. Did Homer write it, or was it simply a collection of oral tales told for many years and finally put into writing? We don’t even know that for sure.
So is Odysseus a real guy? Well, it’s possible he actually was. But scholars have been unable to find any definitive proof, so we don’t know. That’s the short answer.
The thing is, characters like Odysseus pop up frequently across world mythology, so it’s possible that he’s an archetype of sorts, that serves a crucial role in a particular story structure.
It’s also possible that he’s a sort of combination of multiple small-time rulers in that area around Ithaca during that time. Or that he was based on a man that was cool enough to have stories told about him, and then those stories got exaggerated and embellished over the years.
But for the most part, Odysseus is generally considered a legendary figure and not a historical one.
Was the Trojan war real?
Here’s where things get more interesting.
Troy and the Trojan War are all over ancient sources. They were a huge part of the history in the Greco-Roman world. Besides Homer, Virgil’s The Aeneid, an epic about the founding of Rome, is also a story featuring Trojans and the Trojan War.
But for a long time, we didn’t know what to make of Troy. It’s not like you would cross the Aegean Sea and there would be a “Welcome to Troy” sign.
But in the 19th century, discoveries in Turkey on the coast revealed that there may have been a city and it may have been Troy. Not only that but archaeological evidence points to the possibility of war.
So historians are now less skeptical about Troy being merely legend, and now generally it’s agreed that Troy was a real place. And it would make sense that such a defining place and conflict for the history of so many people would be at least based upon something real, something that actually happened.
Is The Odyssey movie based on a true story?
So, is the 2026 movie The Odyssey based on a true story? The answer is, probably loosely based on something real, yes. As for the monsters and gods, well, I’ll let you decide.
